How a Tube
Sheet Is Made

From certified raw plate to a finished, inspected component — the real production sequence, in the order it actually happens on the shop floor, including where cladding and heat treatment fit in.

The Real Sequence

Seven stages, start to finish

Cladding and grooving are conditional — they only appear if the drawing calls for them — everything else happens on every order.

Material Certification & Receipt

Incoming plate is verified against mill test certificates for chemistry and mechanical properties before it's released to production.

Rough Cutting / Forging

Plate is cut to rough diameter, or a forged blank is sourced directly, when directional grain strength is specified.

Cladding (Conditional)

If specified, a corrosion-resistant overlay is metallurgically bonded to the base plate before hole drilling begins.

CNC Drilling & Grooving

The tube hole pattern is machined to the specified pitch and tolerance; grooves are cut where the joint design calls for them.

Heat Treatment

Stress-relief or solution annealing, depending on material, to restore properties affected by machining and remove residual stress.

Final Machining & Facing

Finish machining to final thickness, flatness, and face surface finish requirements.

07

Inspection & Documentation

Dimensional check, NDT where specified, and compilation of the material test report and inspection certificate package.

Questions about the production process

Before. The corrosion-resistant overlay is bonded to the base plate first, then the combined clad plate is drilled as a single unit, ensuring every hole passes cleanly through both the base metal and the cladding layer with consistent geometry.

Machining introduces localized residual stress around each hole. Heat treating after drilling relieves that stress across the finished hole pattern rather than only the raw plate, which is what the design calculation assumes when it uses the material's rated allowable stress.

Forged blanks are sourced to the required diameter and thickness directly from the forge, which is one reason forged tube sheets are specified for large, high-pressure applications beyond what a rolled plate can reliably provide in a single piece.
