Family Overview

Broad-spectrum resistance to the most aggressive acids

Hastelloy alloys combine high molybdenum with nickel and chromium to resist both oxidizing and reducing acid environments — a combination most single-purpose alloys can't match. It's the reach when a process stream's chemistry is variable, mixed, or not fully characterized, and when stainless, duplex, and even Inconel have all fallen short.

C276 has the longest track record across the broadest range of reducing acid conditions; C22 offers improved resistance in certain oxidizing conditions like wet chlorine, plus better as-welded corrosion resistance without post-weld heat treatment.

Advantages & limitations of the family

Advantages

  • Resists both oxidizing and reducing acid environments
  • Excellent resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion
  • Good weldability without post-weld heat treatment

Limitations

  • Highest cost of the commonly specified corrosion-resistant alloys
  • Slow, tool-intensive machining
  • Often over-specified where a targeted alloy would suffice
FAQ — Schema Marked

Questions about the Hastelloy family

It's a reasonable conservative choice, but a proper fluid analysis often reveals that a less expensive targeted material — stainless, duplex, or Monel — is entirely adequate, making Hastelloy unnecessary spend.

C22's higher chromium content gives an edge in wet chlorine and oxidizing chloride solutions plus better as-welded resistance without PWHT; C276 has a longer track record across broader reducing acid conditions.
