The classic marine condenser alloy family

Copper-nickel alloys have the longest service track record of any material in seawater condenser applications, offering good biofouling resistance and general corrosion resistance at a lower cost than titanium or duplex steel. The family is defined by nickel content — 90/10 is the economical default for general seawater cooling, while 70/30 adds nickel for better erosion-corrosion resistance at higher flow velocities and more severe biofouling conditions.

Questions about the Copper Nickel family

Yes, for the large majority of standard seawater and brackish cooling water systems at moderate flow velocity, 90/10 provides adequate resistance at lower cost than 70/30.

When flow velocity is high enough to risk erosion-corrosion on 90/10, or where biofouling conditions are unusually severe.

Copper-nickel is generally more economical with a longer track record, while titanium offers better resistance at very high velocities and is significantly lighter — the choice often comes down to budget and specific velocity/weight requirements.
