Freshwater cooling duty at a cost step below copper-nickel

This family covers copper and its common alloys — brass, aluminium bronze, phosphor bronze, and naval brass — used primarily for freshwater cooling and condenser service where seawater's chloride severity isn't present. These alloys offer good thermal conductivity and adequate corrosion resistance in freshwater at a lower cost than the copper-nickel family, but are not typically recommended for seawater duty.

Naval brass and aluminium bronze offer somewhat better corrosion resistance within this group; phosphor bronze is valued for its mechanical properties in specific fitting and fastener applications adjacent to tube sheet assemblies.

Questions about the Copper, Brass & Bronze Alloys family

Not recommended — for seawater or brackish water service, the Copper-Nickel family (90/10 or 70/30) offers meaningfully better corrosion and biofouling resistance at a modest cost increase.

Primarily cost — since freshwater doesn't present the same chloride corrosion challenge as seawater, the additional nickel content in copper-nickel alloys isn't necessary, making this family more economical for freshwater duty.
