Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number (PREN) is a simplified index, typically PREN = %Cr + 3.3(%Mo) + 16(%N) for duplex grades. 316L sits near PREN 24–26 depending on chemistry. 2205 duplex commonly reaches PREN 34–38. Higher PREN generally improves resistance to chloride pitting and crevice attack — but temperature, velocity, and deposit cover still matter.

Duplex 2205 offers roughly twice the yield strength of annealed 316L. In theory that allows thinner tube sheets for the same pressure if ligament rules pass. In practice hole pattern often governs thickness more than allowable stress. Never thin a sheet on yield strength alone — run TEMA/ASME ligament and deflection checks per engineering guidance.
